Our Lady of Guadaloupe
|
The devotion
known as "The Rosary" developed gradually over a period
of centuries. The format we use today can be traced to about 1200,
when Bishop Ordo of Siliac required clergy to add the "Ave"
to the Creed and Pater.
The Psalter of Our Lady became popular among the layity
soon after, and then (according to tradition) in 1208, The Blessed
Lady appeared to St. Dominic with a rosary in her hands, as he prayed
for her help in defeating the Albigensian heresy. She taught him how
to pray the Rosary.
If you want to learn more about the history of the Rosary and the
beautiful prayer we call the Hail Mary, you may want to look into
the Rosary Workshop.

The
recitation of the Rosary is certainly not restricted to Catholics!
All Christians know that Mary is the Mother of Christ, and most understand
that Jesus gave her as Mother to all of us as he was dying on the
cross. She touches her Divine Son, sitting at the right hand of his
Father, and also we mortals here on earth. The Rosary is a framework
we can use to associate ourselves with Mary, during the key events
of Jesus's life on earth. During this prayerful association, our souls
are open to the voices of Jesus and his Mother. We pray, and we listen.

The
Rosary Workshop: A group of parishioners at the Church of The Precious
Blood in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, who make, sell, and collect "artwork
rosaries " and antique rosaries. Over a period of years, these women
have made the Rosary the center of their devotion to Our Lady - especially
as she revealed herself at Guadaloupe in Mexico. For an exhaustive history
of the entire concept of "counting prayers" and the "Ave
Maria", visit their extensive Web site at: http://www.rosaryworkshop.com
